Registered Dietitians (RD’s) are considered the food and nutrition experts. In California, “Registered Dietitian” is a legally protected term. That means only those who are properly credentialed people may use the title. Some of them have additional certifications in their areas of specialization. However, these certifications are not required to become a Registered Dietitian. Some Registered Dietitians Renal nutrition, Sports Dietetics, Gerontological Nutrition, Oncology Nutrition, and more.
Commission on Dietetic Registration Accreditation
The certifications are awarded through the credentialing agency, CDR. They can also be awarded by nutrition and medical organizations that are fully recognized within the profession. Examples of these certifications include sports dietetics, nutrition support, renal or pediatric nutrition and diabetic education. However, many states have laws that govern nutrition practitioners and dietitians. In most cases, the requirements for this profession in different states are met through the training an education that is needed to become a Registered Dietitian.
Didactic Program in Dietetics-Verification of Completion
Student will receive DPD (Didactic Program in Dietetics) verification of completion form after satisfying the requirements for the Bachelor of Science degree.
The DPD director’s signature on the form verifies that given individual successfully completed all the didactic requirements. Before graduation, all students will be required to give out their current mailing address to the director of the Didactic program for the purpose of mailing of the verification of completion form. After a student’s degree has been posted, the director will send the verification of completion form via mail. This form is sent to all students who completed the program successfully. At least three copies of the form will be mailed to each student. The verification of completion form is very important. This is because it will be required when one wants to sit for Dietitian Technician Registered examination (Commonly referred to as DTR exam). It is also required for at beginning of the internship done before one becomes a Registered Dietitian.
