Ortho-Bionomy is a form of bodywork that uses a non-invasive style of manipulation to correct the symptoms associated with structural imbalance. Based on the principles of Osteopathy, Ortho-Bionomy is gentle yet effective way to alleviate chronic stress, muscle tension, chronic and acute pain, and is great for increasing flexibility, soothing painful joints, relaxing the body, and improving circulation. This form of bodywork greatly emphasizes patient comfort and never uses forceful manipulation.
History:
Ortho-Bionomy was first taught in the 1970’s by it creator, Dr. Arthur Lincoln Pauls. This British osteopath sought to work with the body’s inherent intelligence without using invasive techniques. By exaggerating the body’s preferred postures, he found a gentle way to bring proper alignment and balance back to the body’s structure. The term Otho-Bionomy roughly translates to “the study of correct/straight life†and Dr. Paul defines it as “the correct application of the laws of life.†Properly aligned structured allows greater circulation which is a key foundation for health and wellness.
Treatment:
Ortho-Bionomy treatments can be performed with the patient on a massage table, sitting in a chair, or while standing up. Patients are generally fully clothed, treatment is non-invasive, and clients may also work with therapists cooperatively. Practitioners use gentle manipulations of the body along with energy based, non-physical techniques to bring health back to the body. Treatments generally lasts an hour, and patients are often prescribed a program of self-care after two to four weekly sessions with the therapist. The number of treatments needed depends on the severity of each person’s condition and how they react to the treatment itself.
