Pharmacy Calculations & Mathematics
In order to be a successful pharmacy technician, you need to have a good grasp of mathematics. Math is critical in order to determine the correct preparations & medication dosage. Proper dosage is used during pharmaceutical applications. The course covers percentages, ratios, decimals, fractions, and other mathematical calculations. Retail pharmacy best business practices are also covered in this class. In order to earn credit for this course, a grade of “C” or better must be received.
Pharmacy Clinical Applications
The Pharmacy Clinical Applications course is focused on pharmacology of the nervous systems, patho-physiology, physiology, and anatomy. Once this class is successfully competed, the pharmacy technician student will be able to properly demonstrate proper procedures needed to interpret, fill, & label a prescribed medication. The proper procedures for processing & preparing refills is also covered. A “C” or higher grade is necessary to successfully complete this course.
Pharmaceutical Lab Applications
The Pharmaceutical Lab Applications course gives the San Joaquin Valley College pharmacy technician student hands-on lab experience in the proper way of dispensing, distributing, compounding (non sterile) and manufacturing medications and prescriptions. Special pharmacy tools & supplies needed to process prescription orders. Diagnostics & Over the counter medications & products are discussed and covered in this course, as well. A “C” grade or better is needed to successfully pass the Pharmaceutical Lab Applications course.
The pharmacy technician certification course at San Joaquin Valley College’s Bakersfield campus offers two educational tracks. The first is a 7 month program which ends with a Pharmacy Technology certification.
The second program is a 14 month program. This 14 month program ends with the student being awarded an Associate of Science Degree. Students who graduate our Associates degree program are eligible to register with the State Board of Pharmacology as a licensed Pharmacy Technician, and are qualified to take the national Board Exam to become a CPhT (Certified Pharmacy Technician). HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) certification can also be attained once the Pharmacy Technician program at San Joaquin Valley College has been successfully completed.

Once you have graduated from the San Joaquin Valley College Pharmacy Technician Program you will need to pass the National Pharmacy Technician Exam in order to practice. The exam is given to all aspiring pharmacy technicians and you should be well prepared for it before leaving school.
