Applications for the Fall 2017 dental hygiene program will be accepted from November 1st 2016 to February 1st 2017.
In order to be eligible to apply to the dental hygiene program at Santa Rosa Junior College, a total of at least 29 units of prerequisite classes must be completed. 7 prerequisite classes must be completed prior to applying to the dental hygiene program. Although students can still apply with ONE prerequisite science course still in progress, this will SERIOUSLY effect your chances of being selected in the random drawing for students, as you’ll read below under the “Waitlist/Selection Process” headline. The science, math, and comprehension classes are about the same as the other dental hygiene schools in California, but you have many more options to choose from when it comes to selecting which class you decide to choose. Although you only need 29 units of prerequisites to apply, the dental hygiene program, including the prerequisites, totals 98 units. Prerequisites for the dental hygiene program at Santa Rosa Junior College:
First of all, what does your GPA have to be in order to apply to the dental hygiene program? For your non-science classes, you have to have a cumulative GPA of 2.5. For your science prerequisite classes, your cumulative GPA must be 2.7 or higher. Update for the selection process for the dental hygiene program at Santa Rosa Junior College: After the 2015 class, preference points are no longer awarded for being a resident of Lake, Mendocino, or Sonoma Counties. So, as long as you meet the GPA and course prerequisites, you’re eligible to to have your name placed in the “selection pool”. 24 applicants will be randomly selected from this pool of names to fill the seats for the upcoming dental hygiene program. ALL applicants will be notified within 6 to 8 weeks whether or not their name has been selected.
There will also be a second random drawing; those who are selected will be alternates who will be used to fill in any empty spots. There is also an “In Progress Pool”, for those who still have 1 science class still in progress. But I wouldn’t bet on getting an available spot, because they first go through the first random drawing, then the alternate placements, with the “In Progress” students at the end of the line. There would have to be a TON of qualified students dropping out at the last second to get to the “In Progress” list. But it doesn’t hurt to apply. As you may have noticed, there are no preference points awarded, so you have as good a chance as anyone else to be selected! It’s TRULY the luck of the draw!
Although the costs for the 2 year dental hygiene program at Santa Rosa Junior College is about the same as the other California Community College dental hygiene programs, the costs at SRJC are much clearer(all costs are approximate):
So, students are looking at about $17,000 total for the 2 year program. When you add in the costs of tuition and books for the prerequisite courses, it’s right about $20.000. A lotta dough, but definitely worth it for a solid education in an in-demand field!

Health careers are booming nowadays, even recession-proof during these times of crisis. Health careers are stable and respected jobs, and dentists are no different. If you wanted a sure bright future and stable income, then becoming a dental hygienist or dentist is one of the best careers out there for you—and you can only be a dental hygienist if you get your schooling from accredited dental hygiene schools around the United States of America.
The dental hygienist’s job is to ensure the health and hygiene of their patient’s teeth and gums. This can be done through regular check up, using many procedures and teaching the patients how to better take care of their teeth and gums against disease.
According to United States’ Bureau of Labor Statistics, the dental hygienist career will grow to 36% in the next eight years. The average dental hygienist salary in the US earns an average of US $76,570 a year in 2014, and is expected to increase steadily over the years. Some are members of dental offices, hospitals, and clinics, while others have their own practices. Moreover, the dental work mostly has part time or flexible schedule basis.
Of course, a respected profession like this requires a degree from any accredited dental hygiene schools in the US. Some states, such as Florida and others, also allow foreign trained dentists, making it an appealing career option for many foreigners.
Training will take around two years to complete, and it requires one to submit a high school diploma and must have passed the college entrance test score. As of this year, there are 313 accredited dental hygiene schools in the United States. They train students with the necessary health science subjects such as microbiology, nutrition, anatomy and chemistry; as well as dental health related subjects like periodontology, dental radiology, clinical dental hygiene, etc.
After completion of the course you are required to take a written exam by the National Dental Exams of the American Dental Association.
