Didactic Program in Dietetics At Sacramento State
In order to ensure that the competencies and skills needed for entry level dietetics practitioners are met, the Special Major in Dietetics has created a curriculum that’s specifically designed and identified by the Dietetic Association Standards of Education that is composed of an advisory panel of local dietitians, as well as the faculty of Family and Consumer Sciences.
The curriculum aims to help the students and faculty members in food and nutrition achieve not only personal growth, but professional performance and advancement as well. The Family and Consumer Sciences Department is composed of five food and nutrition faculties who have advanced degrees in education and/or nutrition. The faculty members of this department are Registered Dietitians and active members of the local Northern Area Dietetic Association, as well as the American Dietetic Association. Thus, the professional and academic experiences of the food faculty and nutrition greatly vary and it represents all areas of dietetics, including: clinical nutrition, nutritional metabolism, community nutrition, and food service management. Being a graduate of this department entails a verification statement in accordance with the American Dietetics Association guidelines. Likewise, the New Grads from Sac State are guided and encouraged to take the essential steps that will properly prepare them to become Registered Dietitians with the professional competencies needed to work in dietetic-related professions. It doesn’t matter if a graduate chooses to pursue a career in dietetics, food service management, or teaching, the Department requires that the graduate has the skills and expertise needed to carry out their tasks after the completion of the program and with the guidance of a supervised practice. Those who have earned a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics are expected to be academically prepared in applying for the American Dietetic Association that’s accredited and supervised by the program. This will establish the eligibility for active membership in the ADA and they’ll also be the one who will organize the examination for the dietitians. In order to become a Registered Dietitian, one of the requirements is to complete the degree, followed by the practice program, and lastly, you’ll prep to pass the Examination for Registered Dietitians. Sac State’s Dietetic program will guide you throughout the process, in order to ensure that you’ll become a Registered Dietitian once you complete the course.
The Dietetic Internship
Dietetic students are allowed to apply to a supervised practice program, also referred as the Dietetic Internship (DI), months before their graduation. The application deadline for this usually falls in mid February, as a way to start in late summer of the year.
However, it can also take place around September of the same year, as a way to start in January the following year. In order to become qualified for this, the applicant should obtain a Verification Statement or a Declaration of Intent to Complete. Additional information about this can be found in the Verification Statement Procedures or Transcript Evaluation. Getting accepted into a Dietetic Internship can be challenging. There are a number of things to consider, such as GPA, work experience or volunteer work associated to dietetics, extracurricular activities, personal statement, reference letter, oral interviews, and so on. Students are advised to prepare early to ensure that everything needed for the application process will be gathered on time. Also, a Dietetic Internship application preparation course is opened during fall.
Registration Examination For Dietitians
Aside from completing the DI program, students are also required to take the Registration Examination for Dietitians.
Passing the exam is the last step in becoming a Registered Dietitian, which is a legally protected title. To obtain more information about this, visit www.eatright.org. Passing the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) Exam is required for the State in which you plan on becoming licensed to practice as a Registered Dietitian. Please keep in mind: You can begin referring to yourself as an “RD” once all steps for CDR accreditation have been completed. Once you receive notice of eligibility (via email) from ACT (this is the testing service CDR uses), you have one year to take the CDR exam.
